Roy Meriwether’s first album, this is very much in style of the day - think Les McCann and Ramsey Lewis, or the Three Sounds - with its mix of funky/gospel style piano in a nice program of original blues and standards. But Meriwether is a first-rate pianist, and the album - recorded in 1965, with his tight working trio - holds up well - I hadn’t heard it in years, and was actually surprised to see it reissued on CD. He went on to record a few more LPs for Columbia, and and continued to record well into the 21st century on small labels, often in places like Dayton or Indianapolis. The reissue from Sony is a pretty bare-bones production, no notes or recording information, just a nice reproduction of the pop art cover. Good sound, reasonably priced, well worth taking a chance on if you’re interested in discovering something you probably missed the first time around.
